If a drive is clicking, beeping or grinding, the read heads are failing to position correctly. Every further power-on risks the heads contacting the platter surface and scraping away the magnetic layer holding your data. Once that happens, no amount of money recovers it.
So the first instruction is the most important: unplug it now, and do not plug it back in.
What not to do
- Do not keep trying. Each attempt causes cumulative physical damage. This is the single most common way recoverable drives become unrecoverable.
- Do not put it in the freezer. This widely-shared advice adds condensation to a mechanical problem.
- Do not run recovery software on a clicking drive. Software recovery assumes healthy hardware; on a failing drive it simply generates thousands of damaging read attempts.
- Do not shake or tap it. Ever.
What actually works
Professional recovery starts by stabilising the drive and imaging it sector by sector, prioritising the directories you care about most, and tolerating bad sectors rather than retrying them endlessly. All subsequent recovery work happens on that image, never on the failing drive — which typically gets a limited number of controlled read attempts and no more.
A customer in Edison brought us a drive holding eleven years of family photographs. Another shop had repeatedly powered it on, measurably worsening the head damage. We still recovered 94 percent, and the 6 percent lost fell precisely in the region those earlier attempts had damaged. Had he come to us first, it would likely have been complete.
Afterwards
A failed drive is a warning about your backup arrangements, not bad luck. Any file that exists in one place is a file you are prepared to lose. Set up automatic backup to three destinations, and test that a restore actually works.
