The challenge
What was going wrong
A period property with thick internal walls left two bedrooms and the kitchen with no usable signal. Both parents worked from home and lost video calls daily. They had already bought two range extenders that made the problem worse by creating competing networks.
The solution
What we built
A room-by-room survey showed exactly where signal died and why. We removed the extenders, repositioned the router out of a cupboard, ran one cable to a central point and installed three mesh nodes — without drilling through any original features.
How we approached it
Stage 1
Measured signal strength and actual throughput in all fourteen rooms
Stage 2
Identified the router sitting in a cupboard behind a smart meter
Stage 3
Found the two extenders were creating competing networks
Stage 4
Removed the extenders entirely
Stage 5
Ran a single discreet cable to a central hallway point
Stage 6
Installed three mesh nodes positioned by measurement, not guesswork
Stage 7
Configured a guest network and changed default router passwords
Stage 8
Produced a before-and-after coverage map
Outcome
- Full coverage in every room including the previously dead bedrooms
- No dropped video calls in the eight months since
- Speeds in the kitchen rose from 3 Mbps to 240 Mbps
- Two useless extenders removed rather than replaced with more hardware
